Physical Education

Sport plays an important part in the curriculum. Games lessons take place twice a week from Year1 to Year 6. Safety at games, following instructions, fair play and sportsmanship, developing individual skills to be used in team games, fitness, gymnastics and ball skills are taught during Games lessons.

Sports on offer at Laleham Lea include rugby, soccer, netball, swimming, table tennis, cross country, athletics, cricket and lacrosse.

Both boys and girls compete successfully against other schools in many of the above sports.

Art

Art Lessons at Laleham Lea allow children to explore and to express themselves creatively in a wide range of mediums, which include clay, papier-mache, paint, chalk, material etc. They are also introduced to Art History and study the lives of famous artists. Art is taught by the class teacher up to Year 2 and by a specialist teacher from Years 3 to 6.

Music and Drama

From the beginning great emphasis is placed on Music. Children are taught rhythm, pitch, timbre, tempo and volume and are encouraged to perform. Instrumental concerts are held three times a year and allow children to perform publicly, both individually and as members of a group. From Nursery, children are encouraged to sing and make music. Recorder is taught progressively from Year 1 to Year 6. The Music Department is well equipped with keyboards, pianos and various percussion instruments.

Peripatetic staff give individual tuition in a variety of instruments such as clarinet, violin, organ, cello, flute, oboe, brass instruments and guitar. Children who learn an instrument take part in school musical activities such as the orchestra, string and wind ensembles, church services and school concerts and are entered for public examinations when they have reached the required standard.

School Choir At Westminster Cathedral

The Nursery and Infant classes perform annual Nativity and summer musicals. The Year 6 class stages an end of year summer production. The school choir also performs successfully at local festivals.

Information and Communications Technology

There are computers in every classroom as well as in a fully equipped new computer suite. At Key Stage 1 children have access to Language, Maths and Science software. They are also taught to type out their own stories and poems. At Key stage 2, a specialist teacher teaches children computer skills, which enable them to develop their level of competence in word processing, databases, design and layout. They are also taught how to integrate computer skills into other subject areas.

Design and Technology

Design and Technology is generally taught as a follow on from topics covered in class. It may occur as a weekly activity or a day's activity at the end of term. Children are taught the necessary skills for each assignment and are given the opportunity to practise these via focused practical sessions. They are taught to use tools and equipment safely.
